Is it possible to change the independent variable (x) to another variable, say K?
If possible, how?

No, not directly. But if you think it is fun, you can create your function as a custom function, e.g. g(z)=sin(z)+z^2 and then plot f(x)=g(x). However you can change both the text shown in the legend and the label at the axes to use something else than x.
